Tamil Nadu Uses AI, Satellites to Detect Water Encroachments
Tamil Nadu has many ponds, lakes, tanks and reservoirs, but some are being occupied or polluted.
Buildings and other structures can block the paths that carry rainwater into lakes.
This can make flooding worse during the rainy season.
It can also leave less water available during summer.
The state government has created two computer systems to watch these water bodies.
The systems use satellite pictures, maps and artificial intelligence.
They can notice changes in water areas and possible construction.
Officials receive alerts so they can check the locations on the ground.
The tools can also help identify sewage and garbage pollution.
Tamil Nadu has 8,366 encroached water bodies, nearly 22% of the national total of 38,496.
The state has developed TN-WRIMS and TN-Swip using satellite imagery, GIS and AI.
The systems detect construction, track water-level changes and alert officials for field verification.
Initial live monitoring covers Chennai and the surrounding districts of Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur.
The technology can also assess water quality and identify sewage releases or solid-waste dumping.
