Karnataka Launches Digital Mapping System for Rural Water Assets

Karnataka has created a digital system to keep track of water facilities in villages.

These facilities include borewells, tanks, wells, pumps and water treatment plants.

Each facility will be marked on a map and given a digital record.

Officials will check every facility, while senior engineers will inspect some of them again.

The system is meant to show whether projects were really built and whether they are working.

It will also make it harder to submit false bills for work that was not completed.

Karnataka wants to record more than 3 lakh water assets by the end of September.

The government also said it is creating rural jobs and providing money for drinking-water needs.

Water assets: Karnataka has more than 3 lakh rural water assets.
Initial documentation: More than 70,000 assets were documented during the first verification phase.
Geo-tagging accuracy: The application can geo-tag infrastructure with accuracy of up to five metres.
Verification system: All assets will receive physical verification, followed by random checks of 5% and 2% by senior engineers.
Borewell revival: Around 7,700 technically suitable defunct borewells have been recharged.
Rural employment: The state reported 74.77 lakh person-days under the rural employment programme since July 1.
Funding provision: The government provided Rs 3,800 crore in supplementary estimates, while Rs 5,709 crore is expected from the Centre for the employment scheme.
