Tamil Nadu begins ₹500 crore water bodies restoration scheme
In Tamil Nadu, a big project has started to fix water bodies like lakes, ponds, and small village ponds.
The government wants to clean and repair more than 10,000 water channels and about 800 water bodies.
The project will cost about ₹500 crore, which is a very large amount of money.
A minister named N. Anand started the work by opening repairs on a village tank in Chengalpet district.
Those repairs cost about ₹3.19 crore.
The goal is to catch more rainwater when it rains.
This will help the water bodies hold more water and make the groundwater level go up.
That water can then be used for farming and for drinking.
The project is meant to help farmers and people living in rural areas of Tamil Nadu.
Restoration work began on 10,185 supply channels and 809 water bodies in Tamil Nadu under the rural development and panchayat raj department.
The works are estimated to cost ₹500 crore under the 'Viksit Bharat – gram employment guarantee and livelihood scheme' (VB-G RAM G).
Minister N. Anand inaugurated renovation works worth ₹3.19 crore on the Puthur village tank supply channel in Chengalpet district.
The restoration aims to improve rainwater harvesting, increase water body capacity, raise groundwater levels, and conserve water for agriculture and drinking.
The scheme targets rural areas of Tamil Nadu to protect water bodies, enhance water resources, and secure farmers' livelihoods.
