Mumbai Domestic Help Arrested with ₹46.8 Lakh Gold, Antique Coins
A man who helped a family with chores around their home did something wrong.
The police say he took gold jewellery and very old coins that belonged to the family.
The gold was worth a lot of money, about 46.8 lakh rupees.
He had worked for the family for almost ten years, so they trusted him.
One day, the grandmother of the family saw a gold bangle fall out of his pocket.
She looked in the cupboard and found many precious things were missing.
The family called the police.
The man tried to fly to his hometown, but the police caught him at the airport before his plane took off.
The police found the jewellery in his bag and at his village home.
Everything that was stolen was given back to the family.
Amboli police arrested 26-year-old domestic help Rahul Kumar Shafi for allegedly stealing 440 grams of gold jewellery worth ₹46.8 lakh and 120-year-old British-era coins from an Andheri West residence.
Shafi was detained at Mumbai Airport's departure waiting area just 45 minutes before boarding an IndiGo flight to Patna, after police tracked his mobile phone location.
The theft was noticed on July 20 when the employer's mother saw a gold bangle fall from Shafi's pocket; an FIR was registered on July 21.
Shafi, a native of Madhubani in Bihar, had worked for the family for nearly a decade and had unrestricted access to their house.
Police recovered part of the stolen jewellery from his travel bag and the rest from his village home in Bihar, with the entire stolen property recovered.
