Mumbai's Amnesty Scheme Offers Relief to 12 Lakh Homeowners
Many people in Mumbai live in buildings that do not have an official safety certificate.
The certificate is called an Occupational Certificate, or OC.
Without one, a building can be treated as illegal even if residents bought their homes through a legal process.
The new scheme may help about 12 lakh people living in around 25,000 properties.
It applies to properties occupied on or before November 17, 2016.
Eligible properties must have at least 80 square feet of carpet area.
People will also get a 50% discount on several fees and penalties.
The scheme currently covers homes, schools and hospitals, but commercial buildings may be included later.
The civic body plans to start implementing it through ward offices in the next few weeks.
The Mumbai civic body cleared a proposal to issue Occupational Certificates to eligible residential properties, schools and hospitals.
The scheme covers properties occupied on or before November 17, 2016, including homes with a carpet area of at least 80 square feet.
About 25,000 properties and up to 12 lakh Mumbai residents could benefit from the measure.
Eligible applicants will receive a 50% concession on regulation fees, penalties and application costs.
The scheme is expected to be implemented through ward offices in the next few weeks, while commercial buildings may be added later.
