MHADA told to act against developers delaying quota home handover
Some builders in Mumbai promise to give some of their new homes to the city's housing authority, MHADA, so that the authority can give them to people who need affordable homes.
The rules say builders must hand over these homes, but many builders delay doing this for years.
A big government leader named Mangal Prabhat Lodha said this is not okay.
He told MHADA to punish builders who break the rules, and said some builders could even go to jail.
He said this could quickly make about 1,000 homes available for families.
At the same time, MHADA held a big lottery for 2,640 new homes.
More than 75,000 people entered the lottery, which shows how much people in Mumbai want homes.
MHADA also shared plans to build many more homes, hostels, and rental housing in the future.
The next big lottery for homes in Mumbai will happen in early 2027.
Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha directed MHADA to take strict action, including possible jail time, against developers delaying handover of MHADA quota homes.
The lottery for 2,640 affordable homes in Mumbai drew 75,127 applications, an average of 28.54 applications per flat.
Lodha said strict enforcement could immediately make around 1,000 MHADA-reserved homes available for allotment to eligible homebuyers.
MHADA CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal said the authority targets constructing more than 7.5 lakh houses as part of the state's housing vision.
The next Mumbai Board housing lottery is expected to be launched in January-February 2027.
MHADA has identified 925 acres in Mumbai for cluster redevelopment over the next seven years, expected to generate about 30,000 homes for MHADA.
