Uttarakhand OKs Ganga Expressway Extension from Meerut to Haridwar
Two neighbouring states in India, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, are working together on a new super-fast road.
The road is called the Ganga Expressway.
Expressways are very long highways where vehicles can drive fast without stopping at traffic lights.
Part of this expressway is already being built between two cities, Meerut and Prayagraj.
Now the two states agreed to make the road longer, all the way to the holy city of Haridwar.
Once the new part is finished, travel between Prayagraj and Haridwar will take only seven to eight hours.
Many pilgrims visit Haridwar, and the road will help them reach the Char Dham Yatra.
The government says the expressway will also create jobs and help businesses grow.
It will make it easier to move goods, which helps trade.
The whole road passes through 12 districts in Uttar Pradesh.
The Uttarakhand Cabinet approved a proposal to sign an MoU with Uttar Pradesh to extend the Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Haridwar.
The proposed 110-140 km extension is expected to cut travel time between Prayagraj and Haridwar to 7-8 hours.
The Ganga Expressway is a 594 km, six-lane (expandable to eight-lane) access-controlled corridor between Meerut and Prayagraj, built at a cost of around Rs 36,230 crore.
It passes through 12 Uttar Pradesh districts and includes a 3.5 km emergency landing facility in Shahjahanpur district.
Officials said the extension will connect Uttarakhand to the national expressway network, boosting pilgrim access for the Char Dham Yatra and creating investment, employment and trade opportunities.
