Maharashtra Seeks JICA Funding For Uttan-Virar Sea Link
Maharashtra wants money from Japan’s JICA agency to help build a large sea link.
The project is called the Uttan-Virar Sea Link.
It is the first phase of a bigger Versova-Virar Sea Link plan.
The first phase would cover more than 55 kilometers.
It would include a sea bridge and roads near Uttan, Vasai and Virar.
Officials say it could make travel to northern parts of the Mumbai region easier.
It could also improve road access to the planned Vadhavan Port.
The state has asked India’s Finance Ministry to approve the funding request.
The project’s cost estimate may change because its design and plans have been revised.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis requested Union approval for JICA funding for the Mumbai-Vadhavan Expressway Connectivity Project.
The proposed Uttan-Virar Sea Link is Phase 1 of the wider Versova-Virar Sea Link project.
Phase 1 spans 55.12 km, including a 24.35-km sea link and connecting roads near Uttan, Vasai and Virar.
The project is intended to improve northern Mumbai Metropolitan Region connectivity and access toward Vadhavan Port.
An earlier estimate placed the bridge and connecting roads’ cost at Rs 87,427 crore, though later planning changes revised the estimates.
