India Adds Record 27 GW Solar Capacity in H1 2026

India is building a lot of solar power, which turns sunlight into electricity.

In the first half of 2026, India added 27 gigawatts of solar power — that is a record and almost half more than the same time last year.

A gigawatt is a huge amount of electricity, enough to power many cities.

Most of the new power India added, about 76 out of every 100 units, came from solar panels.

Companies rushed to finish projects before new rules made solar parts harder to use and before a tax break got smaller.

Some states, like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, built the most solar power.

In total, India now has 165 gigawatts of solar power installed.

That is about 30% of all the electricity India can make.

But the number of new projects being planned went down a lot this year.

India will need good planning and quick approvals to keep building solar power in the future.
