States asked to assess urban water gaps on future demand

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has asked states to assess existing urban piped water supply gaps and prepare project proposals based on future demand projections.
The ministry's reply came in response to the Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, chaired by Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, whose report was presented in the Lok Sabha.
States must prepare saturation plans following technical norms in Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) manuals for estimating present and future water demand.
A utility has been developed on the AMRUT 2.0 platform to assess urban piped water supply gaps and the required infrastructure investment.
The committee requested the ministry to furnish consolidated data uploaded by states and Union Territories and called for an annual nationwide assessment of urban water infrastructure.
