Heavy rain hits southern Odisha as deep depression approaches
Heavy rain is falling across southern and coastal parts of Odisha.
The rain is being caused by a strong weather system called a deep depression.
Semiliguda received 230 millimetres of rain in one day.
Some homes were flooded or damaged, and trees fell in several districts.
Officials moved about 5,000 people to safer places in Gajapati district.
They gave the people temporary shelter and cooked food.
Weather officials warned that more very heavy rain and strong winds could arrive.
Schools and Anganwadi centres were closed in 10 districts, and rescue teams were placed on standby.
Heavy rain affected southern and coastal Odisha, with Semiliguda recording 230 mm in 24 hours.
At least 5,000 people, including pregnant women and elderly residents, were moved to safety in Gajapati district.
The deep depression was located near the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha coast and moving at 5 kmph.
The IMD issued red alerts for Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts.
The government deployed 33 ODRAF teams, closed institutions in 10 districts and advised fishermen to stay ashore.
