Kerala Rain: IMD Red Alert, Schools Closed in 8 Districts
Kerala is a place in India where it rains a lot during the monsoon season.
Right now, the rain is very heavy.
A weather group called the India Meteorological Department put out a big warning called a red alert.
The red alert means very heavy rain could fall in a short time.
Because of this, schools and colleges in eight districts are closed today.
Kids get to stay home so they stay safe from the rain and floods.
Some rivers have overflowed and flooded towns and fields.
The water has started going down in some places, like Kottayam and Pathanamthitta.
But in Kuttanad, the water is still there and going down slowly.
There is also a warning about big waves, called Kallakkadal, that could push seawater onto the land near the coast.
The IMD issued a red alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts, forecasting rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour with gusts up to 50 kmph.
An orange alert was issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, expecting moderate rainfall of 5-15 mm per hour and gusty winds.
Schools and colleges in eight districts are closed today, including all CBSE, ICSE and state-board affiliated institutions.
Floodwaters have started receding in parts of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, though flooding continues in the Kuttanad and Upper Kuttanad regions.
INCOIS warned of the 'Kallakkadal' swell wave phenomenon, forecasting waves of 1.1-1.5 metres that could trigger sea ingress along parts of the Kerala coast.
