Karnataka FDA crackdown: Expired food found at Apollo Hospital canteen
Food inspectors in Karnataka went on a special three-day check of restaurants, hotels and a hospital canteen in the city of Bengaluru.
They wanted to make sure the food people eat is safe and clean.
They visited 60 big hotels and took 77 food samples to test in a laboratory.
At the Apollo Hospital canteen, they found old food that had gone bad, like stale bread and expired rava.
They also found food packets that did not have proper labels.
In other places, inspectors found rotten vegetables, expired milk and old frying oil.
They closed two places because they were keeping expired food.
A McDonald's restaurant got a warning for using a banned chemical on frying oil.
The department said it will keep checking to make sure consumers are served safe and hygienic food.
Karnataka's Food Safety and Drug Administration Department ran a three-day special enforcement drive from August 7-9 covering 60 three-star and five-star hotels in Bengaluru and collecting 77 food samples.
At the Apollo Hospital canteen, inspectors found expired rava, baking powder, stale bread, plastic chopping boards and misbranded items including pani puri, fried gram, green peas and moong dal.
Authorities seized 640 kg of mislabelled cereals, 276 kg of rotten vegetables, 45 litres of expired milk and curd, 12 kg of expired bakery items, 67 kg of mislabelled or expired products and 49 litres of used cooking oil.
A McDonald's outlet on Brigade Road was served notice for allegedly using banned Magnesium Sulfite to treat frying oil, while Hotel Skyye and Pegs and Bottles on Church Street were sealed for allegedly storing expired food.
Notices were issued to violating establishments, including luxury hotels such as The Lalit Ashok and Shangri-La, and legal action has been recommended before adjudicating authorities.
