Karnataka food safety drive seizes expired meat at Mysuru hotels
People whose job is to keep our food safe went to many places that serve food in three big cities in India.
The cities are Mysuru, Mangaluru and Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka.
They checked hotels, restaurants and even a fast-food place called KFC.
They found chicken and meat that had gone bad or was too old to eat.
At two hotels, they took away meat and chicken that was not safe.
They also found old vegetables, moldy food and meat stored the wrong way.
They collected food samples to test in a laboratory.
Some places got warnings, and others were told to close until they cleaned up.
The reason for all this checking is to make sure the food people eat is safe and clean.
Food safety officials seized 68 kg of meat at Grand Mercure Hotel and 9 kg of expired chicken at Rio Meridian Hotel in Mysuru.
A KFC outlet in Mangaluru was inspected after a customer complained that an online-ordered Chicken Peri Peri Leg tasted stale.
In Bengaluru Urban district, teams inspected 60 three-star and five-star hotels and collected 77 food samples for testing.
Inspections found expired food products, rotten vegetables, fungal contamination and improper meat storage at various hotels.
The drive, aimed at enforcing the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, also covered government complex eateries, quick-commerce centres and some Indira Canteens, with notices and closure orders issued.
