Expired Food, Fungal Vegetables Found at Bengaluru's Star Hotels

Health inspectors in Bengaluru checked 26 fancy three-star and five-star hotels to make sure the food they serve is clean and safe to eat.

The checks happened on Friday, August 7.

They found expired food, rotten meat and even mouldy vegetables at some of the city's most expensive hotels.

They also saw messy kitchens, food stored in dirty or unsafe ways, and food packets with wrong labels.

The inspectors collected 35 samples of food, like chicken, fish, milk, spices and cheese, to test in a laboratory.

They took away and destroyed food that was expired or unsafe to eat, including a huge 105 kg of bad food found at one hotel.

The checks were ordered by Karnataka's Health Minister U.T. Khader after people complained about bad food, including on social media.

The hotels were given official notices and could face legal action if they broke the food safety rules.

One hotel, The Lalit Ashok, said its meat was frozen, not spoiled, and that it had already planned to remove the milk that was past its date.
