Heavy September Rain Narrows India’s Overall Monsoon Deficit
India’s monsoon has received much more rain in September than earlier in the season.
The India Meteorological Department said September rainfall was still 5% below normal overall.
However, the heavy rain helped reduce the season’s rainfall shortage from 14% to 12%.
September 26 brought the highest single-day rainfall of the monsoon season.
Some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh received exceptionally large amounts of rain.
The rain caused flooding in many areas of Uttar Pradesh.
Fifty-six people died in rain- and storm-related incidents between September 25 and September 27.
Floodwater covered thousands of hectares and more than 2,000 villages.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the contrasting floods and droughts show the challenges linked to climate change.
September rainfall has so far been 5% below normal at 152.6 mm, according to the IMD.
Rainfall on September 26 was 162% above normal, the highest single-day total of the monsoon season.
West Uttar Pradesh recorded 3,003% above-normal rain, while three other subdivisions exceeded 1,500%.
Rain-and-storm-related incidents killed 56 people in Uttar Pradesh between September 25 and 27.
Floodwater inundated 31,173.50 hectares across 2,415 villages in 15 Uttar Pradesh districts.
