Maharashtra Releases ₹13,336-Crore Farm Loan Waiver to Farmers

The government of Maharashtra, a state in India, helps farmers who borrowed money for their crops but could not pay it back.

It has a plan called the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Farmer Loan Waiver Scheme, which means the government will pay off loans for some farmers.

This week, the government said it will give about ₹13,336 crore to nearly 17 lakh farmers.

The money will be sent directly into the farmers' bank accounts within the next two days.

Not everyone gets help though — about 1.40 lakh farmers were told they cannot be part of the plan.

Some of them pay income tax, and others had paperwork problems.

Farmers need to finish a few steps, like linking their Aadhaar card to their bank account, to get the money.

The government also told banks not to charge extra interest on these loans from April 1, 2026.

The goal is to help farmers worry less about debt and make farming and the rural economy stronger.
