Guwahati airport boosts rainwater harvesting, meets 28% of use
An airport in Guwahati is collecting rainwater to use in its buildings.
Airports need a lot of water for passenger facilities, cleaning, cooling and other daily jobs.
The airport has two very big tanks that together can hold 1,000 kilolitres of rainwater.
In July, the harvested rainwater covered about 28 per cent of the water used at its new Terminal 2.
The collected water is cleaned at the airport's Water Treatment Plant before it is used.
The water is purified through multi-stage treatment so people can drink it from fountains.
Guwahati receives about 1,800 to 2,200 millimetres of rain every year.
This year the airport has already recorded around 1,320 millimetres of rain till August 9.
Using rainwater means the airport depends less on outside water sources.
The airport wants to become water positive while meeting the needs of growing air travel.
LGBI Airport in Guwahati said harvested rainwater met around 28 per cent of water consumed at its newly built Terminal 2 in July.
The airport has two large rainwater collection tanks with a combined capacity of 1,000 kilolitres.
Harvested rainwater is treated at the airport's Water Treatment Plant and used for drinking water fountains, equipment cleaning and cooling tower make-up water.
Guwahati receives around 1,800–2,200 mm of rainfall annually, and the airport recorded about 1,320 mm till August 9 this year.
The initiative supports the airport's goal of becoming water positive and reducing dependence on external water sources.
