India’s Smart Cancer Drug RK-251 Targets Tumor Cells

Scientists in India have made an experimental drug called RK-251.

It is designed to work mostly inside cancer cells instead of healthy cells.

Cancer cells often have higher levels of reactive oxygen species, or ROS.

RK-251 uses these higher ROS levels as a signal to become active.

It then releases a compound called NBDHEX.

NBDHEX attacks proteins that some cancer cells need to survive.

Early tests showed strong effects against a difficult type of breast cancer.

Tests in zebrafish embryos did not show obvious toxicity.

The drug is not available to patients and still needs more testing, including clinical trials in people.
