Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran Steps Down Amid Trust Tensions
Mr. Chandrasekaran was the boss of a very big group of companies in India called Tata.
The group owns big companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Air India.
He decided he will not stay on as boss after his current term as chairman ends in February 2027.
His decision came just before a big meeting on August 18, where people were going to vote on whether he should stay.
There were disagreements between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, a charity group that owns most of the company.
The charity group's chairman, Noel Tata, did not want to support another term for Mr. Chandrasekaran.
The two sides disagreed about how the board should work, the business plan and what to do with another shareholder called Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
Mr. Chandrasekaran worked at Tata for 40 years and became chairman in 2017.
He was chosen by the late Ratan Tata to lead the group.
After the news, the value of shares in some Tata companies fell, and nobody knows yet who will lead the group next.
N Chandrasekaran has stepped down as Tata Sons chairman and will not seek reappointment after his current term ends in February 2027.
His resignation came on August 12, days before the August 18 annual general meeting where shareholders were to vote on his continuation as a director.
The decision follows differences with Tata Trusts, which owns about 66% of Tata Sons, over board representation, business strategy and the proposed exit of minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata opposed the reappointment, seeking conditions including a commitment that Tata Sons never be listed and resolution of the Shapoorji Pallonji stake — commitments Chandrasekaran was unwilling to give.
Shares of Tata Group companies tumbled as much as 5 per cent, led by TCS, while the group faces Air India regulatory scrutiny, TCS pricing pressure and a Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack.
