India's FASTag Users Reach 6.23 Crore, Moves Toward Barrier-Free Tolling

India has more than 6.2 crore vehicles using FASTag, a small electronic tag that pays tolls automatically.

In 2025 the government started a yearly pass for cars, jeeps and vans, and by mid‑2026 it had issued 77 lakh passes.

These passes now make up about a third of all electronic toll payments.

The government is also testing a new system called Multi‑Lane Free Flow, which lets cars drive through toll points without stopping.

It uses FASTag, cameras that read license plates, and smart software to charge the toll automatically.

Seventeen toll plazas have been approved for this system, and five are already working.

The goal is to cut traffic jams and save fuel on India’s highways.
