Vinaytosh Mishra gets additional charge as Odisha DGP
In the Indian state of Odisha, the head of the state police is called the Director General of Police, or DGP.
The current DGP, Y B Khurania, is retiring on August 16.
That means someone new has to lead the police.
Normally, the state picks a new DGP, but this time the selection is taking longer because some people say the choosing process was unfair.
The Supreme Court, which is the highest court in India, is looking into this and has stopped the final decision until August 18.
So the state government gave a senior police officer named Vinaytosh Mishra the temporary job instead.
He will be the boss of the police starting August 16.
He already works as the head of a police department that handles crime and investigations.
Mishra says he will do his best to make sure the law is followed properly, and he thinks cybercrime and narcotics are big challenges.
He will stay in the job until a permanent DGP is chosen.
Senior IPS officer Vinaytosh Mishra will take additional charge of Odisha DGP from August 16, following the retirement of incumbent DGP Y B Khurania, an official notification said.
A 1993-batch IPS officer serving as DG of CID-Crime Branch, Mishra will head the police force until a full-time DGP is appointed.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi approved the Home department proposal for the additional charge, announced on August 14.
The Supreme Court has directed the UPSC not to take a final decision on Odisha's DGP selection until August 18, amid a PIL alleging irregularities in the process.
Mishra, who is due to retire in November, said he will try his best to implement the law, noting cybercrime and narcotics as major challenges for Odisha Police.
