Centre Expands Rs 35 Onion Sales to 19 Cities
The government is selling onions for Rs 35 per kilogram in 19 cities.
This is cheaper than the Rs 50-60 prices seen in several markets.
Recent rains damaged crops and contributed to higher onion prices.
People can buy the onions at fair price shops, government-linked outlets and mobile vans.
The vans will visit different areas to help people who cannot reach a shop easily.
About 1,000 metric tonnes of onions are being sent to major cities.
So far, 669 metric tonnes have been sold through retail and bulk channels.
In Delhi, one mobile van will operate in each of the capital’s 13 districts.
The Centre has expanded its Rs 35-per-kg onion sale to 19 cities as retail prices reach about Rs 50-60 per kg in several markets.
Onions are being sold through fair price shops, NCCF, NAFED, Kendriya Bhandar outlets and mobile vans.
The listed cities include Delhi, Jaipur, Jammu, Dehradun, Shimla, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Guwahati, Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna, Bhojpur and Sharif in Bihar, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Madurai, Thrissur and Kochi.
Around 1,000 metric tonnes of onions are being transported to major consumption centres based on market conditions and price trends.
Delhi is set to receive 1,000 metric tonnes, with mobile vans in all 13 districts selling onions at Rs 35 per kg.
