Himachal CM Seeks Scientific Dredging to Reduce Flood Risks
Heavy rain and floods have filled some rivers in Himachal Pradesh with rocks, sand and other debris.
This makes it harder for the rivers to carry water.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu asked the central government to help remove the material safely.
He said the work could lower the danger to people, roads, bridges and other important structures.
Sukhu wants clear rules so dredging proposals can be approved more quickly.
He also wants river dredging treated separately from ordinary mining.
The work would be based on scientific studies and would mostly happen outside the monsoon season.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu urged the Centre to fast-track scientific dredging of flood-affected river stretches in Himachal Pradesh.
He said debris, boulders, stones and sand had reduced rivers’ water-carrying capacity and increased risks to settlements and infrastructure.
Sukhu sought clear guidelines, a separate river-dredging category on the PARIVESH portal and exemption from compensatory afforestation requirements.
He said dredging would follow scientific assessments, replenishment studies, environmental norms and safety measures, mainly during the non-monsoon period.
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav assured Sukhu that guidelines and support would be provided while considering Himachal Pradesh’s interests.
