India Initiates Efforts to Join France-Led Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet Programme
India wants to build very advanced warplanes called sixth-generation fighter jets.
These are military airplanes that use the newest technology to fly and fight.
India's defence ministry has started working toward joining a big programme to develop these planes.
The programme is called the Future Combat Air System, or FCAS, and it is led by France.
A group in India's Parliament, called the Standing Committee on Defence, is helping guide this effort.
There are two teams of countries already building such jets.
One team includes the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, and the other includes France and Germany.
India hopes to join one of these teams so it does not fall behind.
India is also making its own fighter jet, called the AMCA, and its design is already done.
