LPG e-KYC Deadline Looms With No Clarity, Agencies Stay Open
Many families in Bengal use cooking gas cylinders in their kitchens.
The government wants every gas connection linked to Aadhaar, a special identity card, through a fingerprint check called e-KYC.
The deadline to finish this was this Sunday.
Lots of people waited until the last minute, so queues at gas agencies became very long.
Officials said about 84 out of every 100 customers had already completed the process.
Nobody officially said what would happen to the rest, which made people worried.
Some officials said those customers might stop getting money help from the government.
Others said they would still get cylinders, but at a higher price later.
Gas agencies even opened during holidays so more people could finish on time before the government decides what happens next.
The deadline for domestic LPG consumers to complete biometric Aadhaar e-KYC expires this Sunday.
As of Friday night, there was no official clarity on what happens to consumers who miss the deadline, though sources said an extension was on the cards.
Gas agencies in Bengal will stay open on August 15 and 16, both holidays, from noon to 4pm to maximise compliance.
Non-compliant consumers may stop receiving direct cash benefit transfers and may have to buy cylinders at a revised rate.
Around 75 lakh consumers, or about 84%, in Bengal have completed e-KYC, while agency queues have surged to about 500 people daily.
