Over 2.4 lakh Karnataka voters move out of ASDDO list
Karnataka is getting ready for elections by cleaning up its list of people who can vote.
Your name has to be on this list so you can vote when you are old enough.
Every once in a while, officials check the list to make sure it is correct.
They go door to door and ask people to fill in a form.
Some people have moved away, some have passed away, and some are signed up twice by mistake.
Their names cannot stay on Karnataka's voting list.
More than two lakh people were taken off the problem list after proving they should be on it.
About five and a half crore people are on the voting list, and most of them have already sent back their forms.
The checking started on June 30 and will end on August 17.
After that, the list will be clean for the next election.
Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer V Anbukkumar said over 2.4 lakh (241,082) voters were moved out of the ASDDO category after verification.
The Election Commission of India extended the house-to-house enumeration, which began on June 30, until August 17.
Of the 5.54 crore voters on the roll frozen on June 16, 4,45,57,010 (80.38 per cent) returned forms and will appear in the draft roll.
The remaining 1,08,75,304 voters (19.62 per cent) remain in ASDDO as absent, permanently shifted, dead, duplicated, or other.
The ASDDO list fell from about 111.16 lakh names on August 5 to about 108.75 lakh now, with the next update on August 15 evening.
