NRI Pensioners Can Submit Life Certificates Without Traveling to India
Some older people who worked for the Indian government get a pension, which is money paid to them every month after they stop working.
Some of these pensioners live in other countries, and they are called NRI pensioners.
Every year in November, they must prove they are still alive to keep getting their pension money.
They do this by submitting a special paper called a life certificate.
In the past, this was hard because they had to travel to India or visit an office in person.
Now, they can use a digital system called Jeevan Pramaan.
This system checks their fingerprint or eye scan using Aadhaar, India's identity system.
Once the check is done, a digital certificate is saved online and their bank can see it.
Their pension is paid into a special bank account called an NRO account.
Even if they change their citizenship, they still get their pension.
But if they forget to submit the certificate, their pension payments can stop.
NRI pensioners must submit an annual life certificate, known as Jeevan Pramaan Patra, every November to keep receiving their pension.
Life certificates can be issued by Indian embassies, high commissions, consulates, notary publics, or officers of Indian authorized banks in the pensioner's country of residence.
The government's Jeevan Pramaan digital scheme uses Aadhaar-based biometric authentication, removing the need for pensioners to appear in person.
Pensioners who become non-residents must have their pension credited to a Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account under Reserve Bank of India rules.
A change of citizenship by an NRI pensioner does not affect their entitlement to the pension.
