Doctors in Mizoram have put in the state’s first leadless pacemaker at a government hospital.

The operation took place at Aizawl Civil Hospital.

A pacemaker helps a person’s heart keep a steady beat.

This small device was guided into the heart through a tube inserted into a vein in the leg.

Unlike many older pacemakers, it does not need wires running through blood vessels or a pocket under the skin.

The patient was a 67-year-old pensioner, and the treatment was covered by a state health scheme.

Doctors from Mizoram performed the procedure with guidance from a doctor in Kolkata.

The health minister said this could help the hospital provide more advanced heart care.
