Sabyasachi Returns to New York Fashion Week With Global Craft
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a fashion designer from Kolkata, India.
He returned to New York Fashion Week with a new collection called Bengal Byzantine Broadway.
The show had 72 different looks.
Instead of using only saris and bridal clothes, he showed jeans, plaid shirts, cowboy hats and long coats.
Indian craft appeared in the embroidery, beads, quilting and jewellery.
Christy Turlington opened the show wearing denim.
Some jewellery was inspired by Byzantine history, Mediterranean designs and Mughal coins.
Sabyasachi wanted people to see India as modern and creative, not only through familiar symbols such as elephants and peacocks.
His fashion business is also becoming bigger in the United States.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee presented his 72-look Spring/Summer 2027 collection in New York on 15 September, returning to New York Fashion Week after his last show there in 2009.
The Bengal Byzantine Broadway collection combined jeans, plaid shirts, denim, cowboy hats and long coats with Indian embroidery, beadwork, quilting and embellishment.
Christy Turlington opened the show in a denim-on-denim look, while Rani Mukerji and Poorna Jagannathan attended from the audience.
Jewellery from Sabyasachi’s multi-year collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art drew on Byzantine, Mediterranean and Mughal references.
The show highlighted Sabyasachi’s growing United States business, including his 2022 New York flagship and retail partnerships with Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.
