Kondapalli Council Seeks Tenure Extension After Special Officer Rule
Kondapalli’s elected municipal council wants to remain in office longer.
Its members were elected in 2021.
However, the municipality was run by a Special Officer for nearly three and a half years.
The councillors say this prevented them from working as a normal elected council.
They say their full term should begin when the council started functioning properly on June 15, 2025.
The council has asked to continue until June 15, 2030.
The State government and State Election Commission must decide whether to approve the request.
If they reject it, the council may ask the High Court to intervene.
The Kondapalli Municipal Council unanimously sought an extension of its tenure until June 15, 2030.
Councillors said the elected body functioned fully only from June 15, 2025, after prolonged Special Officer rule.
The council’s current tenure is scheduled to expire on November 23 this year.
Kondapalli’s elected councillors took oath on November 24, 2021, but chairperson and vice-chairperson elections were delayed.
The resolution was sent to the State government and State Election Commission for consideration, with possible High Court action if rejected.
