Experts say the heavy rain may last until August 8.
IMD has forecast an active monsoon spell with widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
A yellow alert for heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds was issued for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for August 6-7.
Residents in Ranni, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, were seen wading through floodwaters after incessant monsoon rains.
Heavy rainfall is likely to continue at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until August 8.
No weather warnings have been issued for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry since August 9.
