UNEP Report Says 1.5°C Breach Is Now Inevitable
Scientists say the world can no longer reliably stop global warming from passing 1.5°C over pre-industrial temperatures.
This does not mean that a completely new danger appears on the exact day the number is crossed.
Instead, many existing problems, such as heatwaves, floods, droughts and extreme weather, are expected to become worse as temperatures rise.
The best scenarios in the report still show warming reaching at least 1.8°C before it might decline.
Other scenarios show temperatures rising above 2°C.
The year 2024 was 1.55°C warmer than pre-industrial times, but one unusually warm year is different from a long-term trend.
The report says annual temperatures are now likely to remain above 1.5°C more consistently.
Returning below the threshold would depend partly on removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but those technologies have so far had limited effects.
