Delhi Rains Cause Economic Loss, Waterlogging, Gridlock and Vehicle Damage
It rained very hard in Delhi and the nearby cities called Delhi-NCR.
The heavy rain filled the roads with water, and many cars got stuck in traffic for a long time.
Because so much water stayed on the roads, lots of vehicles got damaged and needed repairs.
A group called Local Circles asked more than 11,000 people about what happened.
About 63 out of every 100 people they asked said they had to pay extra money to fix their vehicles.
Many people also said they lost work time because they were stuck in traffic.
Most people thought the city was not ready for the rain and gave the administration a poor rating for how it handled the water.
The weather office issued a red alert, its most serious warning, and told people to work from home on Friday.
The weather station at Safdarjung measured almost 99 mm of rain in one day, the most for August so far.
A Local Circles survey of over 11,000 Delhi-NCR residents found about 63% incurred extra vehicle repair and maintenance costs due to waterlogging.
Heavy rain on 6-7 August caused gridlock, with 88% of respondents reporting extra traffic time and 75% losing productivity and working hours.
79% of respondents rated their local administration's waterlogging preparedness as poor or worse, with 50% calling it pathetic.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for 6-7 August; Safdarjung recorded 98.7 mm of rain, the rainiest August day so far.
Authorities issued a second work-from-home advisory for Friday as the warning was upgraded from orange to red.
