TGSPDCL Power Demand Soars to 10,839 MW Amid El Niño

The peak power demand reached 10,839 megawatts, which is enough energy to run millions of appliances at the same time.
The weather was very hot and it did not rain much, because of a weather pattern called El Niño.
Farmers used electric pumps to water their crops in the dry heat.
City people used fans and air conditioners to stay cool.
Factories and technology companies also used more power.
The electricity company strengthened its power lines and kept emergency teams ready so that the supply would not fail.
TGSPDCL recorded a peak power demand of 10,839 MW on August 12, up 3,623 MW from the 7,216 MW recorded on the same day last year.
Power consumption in its service area rose to 207.30 million units, compared with 147.12 million units a year earlier.
The demand surge was attributed to El Niño conditions of warm weather and poor rainfall, which increased electricity-powered irrigation in rural areas.
Urban use of air-conditioners and cooling appliances, along with expansion of the industrial and IT sectors, also drove higher power consumption.
Chairman and managing director Jitesh V. Patil said TGSPDCL strengthened its network capacity, with round-the-clock emergency response teams monitoring supply.
The Core Urban Region recorded a peak demand of 3,920 MW, up 610 MW year-on-year, with consumption of 81.17 million units.
