Mumbai's 102-year-old Noor Mohammadi reopens after hygiene crackdown
There is a very famous, 102-year-old restaurant in Mumbai, India, called Noor Mohammadi Hotel.
People love it because dishes like Nalli Nihari are cooked slowly for many hours and taste special.
This summer, health inspectors came to check the restaurant and found it was not clean enough.
They gave it a score of 45, which is very low, and closed the restaurant for some time.
The owner, Mr. Khalid, and his family worked hard to fix everything the inspectors asked for.
They built a brand-new kitchen with shiny counters, new floors, and clean work areas.
Everyone now wears hairnets to keep hair out of the food, and waste is separated.
When the inspectors came again, the restaurant scored 97 out of 100, which is a huge improvement.
The restaurant got official permission to open again, and customers came back the very same evening.
One customer said the food here has a taste that cannot be found anywhere else.
Mumbai's 102-year-old Noor Mohammadi Hotel reopened Wednesday after its FSSAI licence was suspended in mid-July over hygiene violations.
The first inspection scored the eatery 45 points, citing greasy floors, flies and crows in the kebab section, peeling paint and unclean utensils.
After a complete kitchen rebuild and reinspection, the restaurant scored 97 and received a stay order permitting it to reopen.
Owner Khalid Hakim, grandson of founder Abdul Kareem, said the closure was the restaurant's longest since the Covid pandemic and that staff stayed on at half salary.
First customer Ansari Tufail returned for the Nalli Nihari, a signature dish the family says was introduced to Mumbai by the founder.
