Sardar Sarovar Reservoir Reaches Full Level Amid Gujarat Water Deficit
The Sardar Sarovar Dam is an important source of water for Gujarat.
On Wednesday evening, its reservoir filled to its highest planned level.
This level is called the Full Reservoir Level, or FRL.
The water rose because rivers and streams brought water from parts of Madhya Pradesh.
Earlier that morning, the reservoir was almost completely full.
Even though this dam is full, Gujarat’s total water storage is still lower than it was last year.
The state has about 24.13% less water overall than last year.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a traditional aarti ceremony to mark the occasion.
The Sardar Sarovar Dam reached its Full Reservoir Level of 138.68 metres on Wednesday evening.
The reservoir filled after steady inflows from catchment areas in Madhya Pradesh since mid-August.
Its gross storage reached 9,431.01 million cubic metres, or 99.69% of capacity, on Wednesday morning.
Gujarat’s overall water storage remained about 3,800 million cubic metres, or 24.13%, below last year’s level.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed a traditional aarti at Ekta Nagar to mark the reservoir reaching capacity.
