India Marks World Elephant Day 2026 with Conservation, Conflict Focus
Elephants are big animals that need lots of space to live.
Sometimes they walk into villages and farms, which can be dangerous for people.
This is called human-elephant conflict.
India has about 60 percent of the world's wild Asian elephants.
On World Elephant Day, leaders met in Visakhapatnam to talk about helping elephants and people live together safely.
They use special tools like computers, satellites, and maps to study elephant habitats.
India also trained special elephants called Kumki elephants to guide wild elephants away from villages.
After that, fewer people were hurt in forest areas.
Students across India learned about why elephants matter and how to protect them.
Everyone can help keep both elephants and people safe.
India hosted national World Elephant Day 2026 celebrations in Visakhapatnam, with Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh and Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan presiding.
India has 33 elephant reserves, 150 scientifically identified elephant corridors, and nearly 60 percent of the world's wild Asian elephant population.
Andhra Pradesh reported a 70 percent reduction in human fatalities in forest fringe areas after deploying trained Kumki elephants.
Four Kumki elephants, trained with support from the Karnataka government, joined about 15 operations and led to a visible dip in crop damage.
A Project Elephant awareness campaign drew over 20 lakh students from 21,450 schools, and the '30 Giant Steps' document was released at the event.
