US Senator Slams 100% Tariff Threat on India, China

Some leaders in the United States wanted to put a very big tax, called a tariff, on things brought in from India and China.

This tax would be 100 percent, which means those things would cost twice as much.

A senator named Rand Paul said this was a bad idea.

He called it the 'economic equivalent of shooting ourselves in the foot.'

That saying means we would hurt ourselves while trying to hurt someone else.

He worried the tax would make countries like India unhappy with the United States.

The senators talked about this while debating a bill about Russia.

Another senator named Ron Wyden also said the plan was a bad idea.

People are still deciding whether the United States should go through with the plan.
