US Senate passes 100% tariff bill on Russian oil importers
The United States has a group of lawmakers called the Senate.
They just voted on a new rule called the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.
This rule says the US can add a very big extra tax, up to 100%, on goods from countries that buy a lot of oil from Russia.
Russia is fighting a war in Ukraine, and the US wants to make it harder for Russia to earn money.
The countries that buy the most Russian oil are China, India, Azerbaijan, Hungary, and Slovakia.
The bill is named after a senator, Lindsey Graham, who died after visiting Ukraine.
Some people in India are unhappy about the rule.
One money expert said it is really aimed at hurting India, even though Europe and America also import from Russia.
The rule's supporters say it gives countries a simple choice: do business with America or buy cheap Russian energy.
The bill also keeps older rules about Iran going until 2031.
The US Senate passed the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 by a vote of 86-11.
The bipartisan bill lets President Trump impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from the top five importers of Russian oil and gas: China, India, Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovakia.
Fund manager Harsh Gupta Madhusudan called the measure 'effectively an anti-India bill' and a 'hostile act against India.'
Named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who died on July 11 after a trip to Kyiv, the bill now heads to the House of Representatives.
The bill also extends the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 until 2031 and targets Russian leaders, oligarchs and financial institutions, including Vladimir Putin.

The measure pressures top importers to stop funding Russia's economy during the war, honoring the late senator's legacy as an ally of Ukraine.
State of India-US ties
Critics: an 'anti-India' hostile act
