Retired Scientist Dies After Cardiac Arrest at Satara Half Marathon
A 65-year-old retired scientist named Sanjay Kadam was running in a difficult half marathon in Satara.
He started feeling unwell while running downhill.
Other runners, including a cardiologist, gave him CPR.
An ambulance took him to a hospital for emergency treatment.
Doctors found that one of his major heart arteries was completely blocked.
They opened the artery and put in a stent, which helped revive him.
About four hours later, he had another serious heart attack and died.
Organisers said medical teams were placed along the race route to help runners.
Sanjay Kadam, a 65-year-old retired scientist from Pune, suffered cardiac arrest during the Satara Hill Half Marathon.
Kadam became unwell while running downhill near the Powerhouse area between 9:30 and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Fellow runners and medical teams performed CPR and took him to Pulse Hospital, where doctors inserted a stent after finding a blocked artery.
Kadam was initially revived and stabilised but died about four hours later after another massive cardiac attack.
Organisers said 7,700 runners completed the 21.1-kilometre course, supported by medical teams, bike ambulances and a cardiac ambulance.
