US Sanctions Iran’s Auto and Rail Sectors
The United States has placed new financial restrictions on several Iranian companies.
The targeted businesses make cars or operate rail services.
The US says Iran has been using these transportation systems to move important goods.
These goods include petroleum, fertilizer and chemicals.
The measures are part of a larger campaign called Operation Economic Outcast.
That campaign is intended to reduce money available to Iran’s war effort, missile construction and cyberattacks.
Two major Iranian carmakers were included in the sanctions.
Several railway companies were also included.
The US Treasury says the action is meant to pressure Iran and reduce its revenue.
The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Iranian automotive and railway companies and international suppliers.
The measures are part of “Operation Economic Outcast,” announced August 24 to cut Tehran’s funding for the war and other activities.
Iran Khodro Company and SAIPA were sanctioned; Treasury said they represent more than 90% of Iran’s domestic auto market.
The sanctions also target the Islamic Republic of Iran Railway Company, Raja Passenger Trains Company and Railway Transportation Company.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the action aims to target Iran’s economic enablers and reduce the regime’s revenue.
