Navi Mumbai Group Seeks Action on Sirens and Noisy Vehicles
Navi Mumbai Group Urges Traffic Police To Crack Down On Unnecessary Ambulance Sirens, Modified Silencers · freepressjournal.in

A Navi Mumbai civic group wants the traffic police to reduce loud vehicle noise at night.

It says residents have complained about ambulance sirens on quiet roads and cars or bikes with altered silencers.

The group pointed to Bhau Sakharam Marg in Belapur, where it says sirens are often heard between midnight and 5am.

It recognizes that people may not know whether an ambulance is responding to an emergency.

The group also wants checks on vehicles that make excessive exhaust noise.

It suggested night-time enforcement and using CCTV to identify vehicles for inspection.

It says camera footage alone should not prove that a vehicle broke noise rules.

The group wants the police to report enforcement results and explain what action was taken.

Quotes

Dilip Vaidya

Member of Sajag Nagrik Manch, Navi Mumbai

“Noise pollution has become a serious concern, and for many Navi Mumbai residents a peaceful night's sleep is increasingly difficult. The police should strictly discourage ambulance drivers from using sirens unnecessarily. At the same time, motorists who remove silencers or deliberately create excessive noise merely to draw attention to their vehicles should face prompt action under the law.”

“Our objective is not to inconvenience ambulance services or motorists, but to maintain a balance between the need for emergency vehicles to reach hospitals quickly and the need to prevent avoidable disturbance to residents when there is no corresponding emergency requirement.”
