SEMICON India Charts India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem, Chip by Chip
SEMICON India is a conference about building computer-chip businesses in India.
In 2022, India was mostly trying to show companies that it was serious about making chips.
Since then, companies have announced investments in chip design, research, packaging and factories.
India has also approved several semiconductor projects and begun producing some chips from pilot lines.
Students designed chips that were made at the Semiconductor Laboratory in Mohali.
The Vikram-32 processor was also developed in India and made at that laboratory.
The 2026 conference is expected to focus on suppliers, workers, technology and partnerships that support chip projects already being built.
New large projects may not be announced yet because they still need to go through the government’s evaluation process.
SEMICON India has evolved from promoting India’s semiconductor ambitions to showcasing projects, pilot-line chips and planned production facilities.
The government launched the Rs 76,000 crore Semicon India Programme in 2022 and is now pursuing a second phase with Rs 1.28 lakh crore.
AMD, NXP, L&T Semiconductor Technologies and other companies announced major investments, partnerships or expansion plans across design and manufacturing.
The 2025 edition featured student-designed chips, the indigenous Vikram-32 processor and partnerships involving materials, packaging and semiconductor design.
SEMICON India 2026 is expected to focus on ecosystem partnerships supporting approved projects rather than immediate new fab announcements.
