Over 36,000 industrial units shut in Maharashtra in five years
Many factories and businesses in a big Indian state called Maharashtra have closed down.
In the last five years, more than 36,211 industrial units shut their doors.
Most of these were in Mumbai city, the biggest city in the state.
Pune and Thane also had many factories close.
A government member named Rajabhau Waje asked the government for these numbers.
He wanted to help workers who lost their jobs.
The government said it does not keep track of how many workers were affected.
Workers may not have received money they are owed, like their savings funds or wages.
The government's companies department says there are laws to deal with closed companies.
These laws say workers should be paid before other people get money from a closed company.
6,433 industrial units have closed down in Pune district in the last five years.
Mumbai City recorded the highest closures at 12,009 units, followed by Thane district with 4,704.
Maharashtra collectively saw over 36,211 industrial unit closures in the last five years, according to Ministry of Corporate Affairs data.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajabhau Waje, who represents Nashik, sought the district- and sector-wise closure data.
The Ministry said it does not maintain information on workers affected by company closures.
