Over 36,000 firms shut operations in Maharashtra, government tells Parliament
A place called Maharashtra, which is a big part of India, has seen a lot of companies close down.
The government shared news in Parliament that more than 36,000 companies shut in the last five years.
Most of the closed companies were in business services, which help other companies with things like advice or paperwork.
Many were also factories that make goods.
The biggest number of closures happened in the cities of Mumbai, Pune, and Thane.
Some leaders are unhappy and say the government's rules and corruption made it hard for businesses.
They also worry about the workers who lost their jobs.
The government says it does not have information on how many workers were affected.
When a company goes through a special process called insolvency, worker payments are decided according to the rules.
Leaders are continuing to ask for better data and better support for affected workers.
The Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs told the Lok Sabha that 36,211 private companies in Maharashtra were liquidated, dissolved or struck off over the last five financial years.
Business services saw the most closures (14,613, about 40%), followed by manufacturing, mining and quarrying (6,582).
Mumbai City, Pune and Thane together accounted for 23,146 closures — nearly 64% of the state's total.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajabhau Waje and Congress leaders blamed government interference, corruption and an unfavourable business environment for the closures.
The Centre said it does not maintain data on workers affected by closures, with employee claims handled under insolvency and liquidation procedures.

Cause of business closures
Opposition critics
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajabhau Waje and Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant say excessive government interference, widespread corruption and an unfavourable environment for the business sector are behind the closures and are harming Maharashtra's economic trajectory.
Government / Centre
The government presented the data without attributing a cause; when BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar asked whether over 12,000 small industrial units had closed in four years, Industry minister Uday Samant said the claim was 'partially true'.
Impact on affected workers
Opposition critics
Rajabhau Waje says the Union government has no data on how many workers were affected by closures, pointing to a reported suicide by a sacked labourer in Nashik district.
Government / Centre
The Centre says it does not maintain information on affected workers, and that claims in insolvency or liquidation cases are handled by adjudicating authorities and liquidators under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and statutory priority rules.
Youth and job creation
Opposition critics
Sachin Sawant says RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's message that young people should start businesses is not being implemented by BJP leaders, and claims Maharashtra is lagging behind Karnataka in attracting foreign direct investment.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said that young people cannot all seek jobs and that some would have to start their own businesses.
