Rain Deficit Affects One-Third of India Before Monsoon Ends
India’s rainy season is getting close to its final part.
Rainfall has been lower than usual across about one-third of the country.
This includes 412 districts in 14 states and Union Territories.
Assam had less rain than normal in 19 of its 35 districts.
However, Assam also experienced some of its worst floods in recent years.
Much of the rain in July and August fell over central India, between Odisha and Gujarat.
Across the country, rainfall since June 1 was 13% below normal.
The India Meteorological Department says the rainfall level has stayed below normal throughout the season.
Nearly 35% of India’s geographical area has experienced a significant rain deficit.
The deficit affects 412 districts across 14 states and Union Territories.
Affected areas include parts of southern, northeastern, eastern, and northwestern India.
Assam recorded rainfall deficits in 19 of its 35 districts despite facing severe floods.
India received 554.2 millimetres of rainfall since June 1, 13% below normal.
