Maharashtra Governor Urges Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Chair at Universities
Long ago, a wise and very brave man named Guru Tegh Bahadur lived in India.
He was a Sikh holy leader who cared about other people.
He gave up his own life to protect the right of people from other religions to pray freely.
Recently, a leader from Maharashtra named Jishnu Dev Varma asked universities to create a special program in his honor.
This program is called a 'chair.'
It will help teachers and students learn lots about the Guru's life and ideas.
The leader said his story can teach us to be kind and live together peacefully.
He spoke at a big meeting where many important people gathered.
The meeting was held to remember the 350 years since the Guru's brave sacrifice.
People from the Sikh community, writers, and government leaders all joined to honor his memory.
Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma called for establishing a 'Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Chair' at state universities to promote research on the Sikh guru's legacy.
He spoke at the inaugural session of a national seminar on 'The Legacy of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur' held at Punjab Heritage Bhavan in CBD-Belapur.
The seminar marked the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur and was organised by the Union Ministry of Culture, Sahitya Akademi, and the Punjabi Cultural and Welfare Association.
Varma described the Guru's sacrifice for protecting the religious freedom of other faiths as unparalleled and an inspiration for democracy and social harmony.
He called Maharashtra and Punjab 'twin states,' citing Sant Namdev Maharaj's link to Punjab and Guru Gobind Singh's association with Nanded.
