It remembered Major Durga Malla, a brave Gorkha freedom fighter.

Major Malla worked for the Indian National Army.

The British captured him after intelligence missions.

He was executed in Delhi on 25 August 1944, when he was 31.

The day is called Balidan Diwas and is observed every year on 25 August.

Shringla also spoke about jobs, education and livelihood programmes for people in Darjeeling Hills and North Bengal.

He said discussions were continuing about the community’s long-standing aspirations and a constitutional resolution.
