Over 43 Lakh Voters Deleted From Jharkhand Draft Electoral Rolls
Before big elections, India checks its voter lists to make sure they are correct.
Jharkhand is a state in India, and the people in charge of elections there just finished checking every door in the state.
They visited homes to ask people if they still live there and want to vote.
Some people had moved to other places, some had passed away, and some names were listed twice.
So the officials removed those names from the list.
More than 43 lakh names were taken off, which is a lot of people.
That means the voter list went from about 2.64 crore names to about 2.21 crore names.
Most people, about 83 out of every 100, did give back their forms.
This is called a Special Intensive Revision.
The new draft list will be checked again before the final list is made.
The Election Commission published Jharkhand's draft electoral rolls on Wednesday after the enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Over 43 lakh names (43,61,987) were deleted from the draft rolls under the ASDD (Absent, Shifted, Dead, or Duplicate) list.
Deletions included about 7.63 lakh deceased, 15.92 lakh permanently shifted, 14.50 lakh untraceable or absent, and 4.38 lakh registered in multiple places.
The state's elector count went from 2,64,63,236 before enumeration to 2,21,01,249 in the draft roll.
The door-to-door enumeration exercise ran from June 30 to July 29, with 83.51 per cent of electors submitting enumeration forms.
Around 1.16 lakh voters refused to sign and did not return their enumeration forms to booth-level officers.
